Editing InstallingRuby (revision 45)

== Standard Install on MS Windows ==

Installing Ruby on Windows is simple, thanks to the one-click, self-installing executable from 
RubyInstaller. That's pretty much all there is to it. See RubyInstaller for more details.

== Standard Install on Unix ==

To install on a Unix-based system like Solaris or <nowiki>GNU/Linux</nowiki>, grab a release from the download page at  http://www.ruby-lang.org, then, after unpacking it, follow the instructions in the README, which describe the familiar "./configure; make; make test; make install" steps. Do the "make install-doc" step for <code>ri</code> documentation to work.

Following those instructions will install Ruby to <tt>/usr/local</tt>. If you would like to install to a non-standard location (say, <tt>/opt</tt>), follow the "custom install" instructions below. For the reasons described below, it is usually wise to ''not'' install Ruby directly into <tt>/usr/local</tt>.

Once Ruby has been installed, you'll want to see about InstallingRubyGems. After you've done that, installing extensions created by others is a breeze.

== Custom Install on Solaris ==

Here's how to install into a non-standard location on Solaris.

Notes:
* Setting the desired location in the configure step creates the internal variables that ruby uses when looking for things. If it's not set, Ruby will fail with load errors.

* To see the paths Ruby is using to find things, use this command: <br> <tt>ruby -e 'p $LOAD_PATH'</tt>.

== Custom Install on <nowiki>GNU/Linux</nowiki> ==

It's a good idea to install Ruby into its own dedicated directory. Two reasons for this are:
# Ruby 1.8.4 does not come with a "make uninstall" feature, so if you install into <tt>/usr/local</tt> and then later want to remove or replace Ruby, you'll have a mess on your hands.
# You may want to have multiple versions of Ruby installed on a given system.

Here's the steps I (JohnMg) follow on Debian (Sarge or Etch) for installing Ruby 1.8.4 into <tt>/opt/ruby-1.8.4</tt> (which is a fairly common location to put substantial standalone packages such as Ruby).

<b>Debian users: Before doing anything else, make sure you've got the following two packages installed: <tt>zlib1g-dev</tt> and <tt>libreadline5-dev</tt>.</b>

After downloading the latest Ruby release, do the following as root:

cd /opt
 mkdir ruby-1.8.4
 mkdir src
 cd src
 mv ~''username''/downloads/ruby-1.8.4.tar.gz .
 tar xzf ruby-1.8.4.tar.gz
 cd ruby-1.8.4
 ./configure --prefix=/opt/ruby-1.8.4
 make
 make test
 make install
 make install-doc
 cd /opt
 ln -s ruby-1.8.4 ruby

Then I make sure I've got <tt>/opt/ruby/bin</tt> in my <tt>$PATH</tt>. Also, for use with RubyGems (see below), I set <tt>RUBYOPT</tt>. That is, in my <tt>~''username''/.bash_profile</tt> (and also in <tt>/root/.profile</tt>), I've added these lines:

export PATH=/opt/ruby/bin:$PATH
 export RUBYOPT=rubygems

Log out then in again to fix your <tt>PATH</tt>. Now grab the latest stable RubyGems from http://rubyforge.org/frs/?group_id=126 .

Again, as root, install as follows:

cd /opt/src
 mv ~''username''/downloads/rubygems-0.9.0.tgz .
 tar xzf rubygems-0.9.0.tgz
 cd rubygems-0.9.0
 ruby setup.rb

As a quick test, let's use the <tt>gem</tt> command to update rubygems (if there's an update available) and to install [[Rake]]:

cd
 gem update --system
 gem query --remote --name-matches rake
 gem install --remote rake
 gem query --local

Now you're good to go. In your code, when you want to use a gem, you don't need to first <tt>require 'rubygems'</tt> since we've already set the <tt>RUBYOPT</tt> environment variable.
